What do you give someone who has everything? What do you give to someone you don’t know very well? What gift do you give your Dad? The answer is Maple Whiskey. It is the perfect thank-you gift, the perfect hostess gift, the perfect anytime gift. Why is it the perfect gift? It is delicious. It is very easy to make. Whoever you give it to will be impressed by the personal touch and your Maple Whiskey making abilities.
So how do you make this versatile gift? It is easy!
Ingredients:
1-1/2 Cups (375ml) Maple Syrup
1-1/2 Cups (375ml) Rye Whiskey
Bring maple syrup to a boil on medium heat. Boil for one minute then remove from heat and let it cool. Stir in whiskey. Store in air tight glass jar at room temperature for 4 weeks.
One batch fills a standard 26 oz alcohol or wine bottle.
The last step is the part I found most challenging. How do you package your gift? I was unable to find containers that I thought would suit the maple whiskey in local stores. Perhaps you will be luckier in your own hometown and if not you may need to get your CreativePlume on. To give you a head start here are the solutions I found:
If you are making large batches you can buy glass containers online. The larger purchase lowers or eliminates the overall shipping cost per bottle. I could not find any places online where shipping a single bottle was worth the cost.
I did happen to find some smaller glass containers without lids and at a craft store found corks which were angled so they sealed the containers. I then printed labels on regular computer paper and glued them on with white glue. For a finishing touch I tied bells to the neck.
Another option was to reuse the whiskey and/or maple syrup container. Some of these containers are really interesting and elegant. This maple syrup bottle for example is in the shape of a maple leaf. A perfect showcase for the maple whiskey.

How long is this whiskey good for? I would like to make it for Christmas:)
Hey Katie,
If you make the whiskey now it will be fine for Christmas. Since the only ingredients are whiskey and maple syrup; both theoretically never go bad. Your whiskey should be good for years. I personally have some left over from a batch I made last Christmas and it is still good. Since it takes a month to make I suggest making a bigger batch; enough to last the year. People are always asking me for some… It’s a great gift to have on hand to give all year round.
is there any way this whiskey can be made in 3 weeks? i’d really like to make some for christmas, but that 2 weeks and 6 days away! haha
Hi Will,
We have also had this problem in the past! This is why we really suggest making big batches at a time. We have tried it before the full 4 weeks and it is still good. Four weeks is the time that it will take the flavour to fully set but we see no problem giving it away a little early. It will still be delicious!
Just to add on to that…
I have made this Maple Whiskey before and taken a taste test _directly_ after mixing the maple syrup with the whiskey. It was delicious. Mind you, as CreativePlume mentioned above, the flavour will still change until it completely sets.
I don’t know much about whisky, can I use scotch or barley whisky instead or does it have to be rye? I can’t find any rye whisky in UK supermarkets and I don’t really want to buy whisky from a specialist store.
Hi Jilly,
We specify rye whiskey because in Canada it generally is also a Canadian whiskey. We like the idea of keeping with the Canadian Maple theme. You can, however, use any whiskey you like. We suggest a light whiskey to not overpower the maple. Ultimately the whiskey is diluted with the maple syrup so the type of whiskey used will not be so important to the end result.
