How To Make A Healthy Iced Tea Vitamin Water Sports Drink:
Water is the best way to rehydrate your body. Sometimes we need a little bit more or we just want a little bit more. The options for flavoured or enhanced drinks are expensive high sugar drinks that have unrecognizable ingredients. There is an alternative! A homemade drink that tastes great, has all the benefits of the store bought options and you can pronounce all the ingredients. The best part of making this yourself is you have complete control over the nutritional value and sugar content of this drink. You can cater it specifically to your own needs. The recipe provided is a balance of both health and taste. It is easy to adjust as needed for your own situation and preferences. Enjoy!
What will you need:
2 Tbsp (4 tea bags) of a tea that is high in vitamin C, any tea that contains rose hips and berries will work. (I suggest using a loose leaf tea like The Cardio from David’s Tea. It is high in vitamin C and other ingredients that are known to aid in heart health.)
2-3 Trays of ice cubes (4-6 cups of bagged ice)
Steep your tea. There are many options for this. First you need a way to steep your tea. If using teabags you can use a large teapot. For loose leaf tea you can use a tea strainer or disposable loose leaf tea bags.
Next you need to choose your method of steeping your iced tea.
The hot method is the fastest way to steep your tea and it is the ideal way to produce the ideal tea flavour. Steep the 2 Tbsp of loose leaf or 4 tea bags in 750 ml (3 cups) of boiled water. Steep for 3-7 minutes (Steep time will depend on the type of tea. Most loose leaf teas provide directions on the packaging) After steeping place ice into a heat safe pitcher/container. If you plan to drink your iced tea immediately and you want your tea to be ice cold you will need 3 ice cube trays (6 cups) of ice. If you will not be drinking it within the hour, 2 trays (4 cups) of ice is all you need. Then strain the tea and pour directly onto the ice.
The cold steep method is an alternative if you have no ice.
To steep place 2 Tbsp of tea or 4 tea bags in 1.25 litres (5 cups) cold water overnight in the fridge.
Ice tea can also be made by placing your regularly steeped hot tea in the fridge for a few of hours.
Add juice to the iced tea.
I suggest grapefruit juice for the high vitamin C and low sugar content. You can use your favourite fruit juice to flavour.
Then To Make It A Sport DrinkIf you need electrolyte replacement like you would get from a sport drink add a ¼ Tsp of sea salt and stir well. Then enjoy!
For the weight concious: Use a green tea – it will give you a kick of caffeine plus green tea is high in anti-oxidants. Then sweeten with Agave Nectar – it tastes similar to honey but has a lower glycemic index.
