London Fog Italian Cream Soda

In the spirit of London 2012 we are sharing with you one of our favourite winter drinks turned summer favourite! Concentrated iced tea is a great way to add flavour to an italian soda. Unlike most syrups that are used to add flavour, you can choose to add as much or as little sweetener as you like. London Fog earl grey tea lattes are a favourite drink for many and we hope you will enjoy a version that can be enjoyed on a hot summer day!

How To Make Homemade London Fog Italian Cream Soda

What You Will Need:

Earl Grey or Cream of Earl Grey Loose Leaf Tea
Ice
Soda Water
Vanilla Syrup

How To Make A London Fog Italian Cream Soda:

First, make a tea concentrate from Earl Grey Tea or Creamed Earl Grey Tea. To make a tea concentrate for one drink, steep 1 Tbsp of tea in 3 Tbsp of hot water (For an alcoholic version tea can be steeped in 3 Tbsp of your favourite liquor).

Fill a glass with ice and add your desired amount of vanilla syrup. Add the Earl Grey tea concentrate to the glass.

Fill the rest of the glass with soda water. Gently stir until the tea concentrate and vanilla syrup are blended. At this point, you have a lighter, dairy-free iced tea italian soda.

To turn it into a London Fog Italian Cream Soda, add little bit of cream or milk, gently stir and enjoy!

How To Make Homemade Iced Tea

Steep Your Tea:
There are many options for this. First you need a way to steep your tea. If using teabags you can use a large teapot. For loose leaf tea you can use a tea strainer or disposable loose leaf tea bags.Just keep in mind that you are steeping a large amount of tea and the more the tea can move the better it will steep. The best but most expensive option is to buy a loose leaf iced tea pitcher. They are basically specialized french presses. We would suggest that if you already have a french press, just use it.

Next you need to choose your method of steeping your iced tea.

The hot method is the fastest way to steep your tea and it is the ideal way to produce the ideal tea flavour. Steep the 2 Tbsp of loose leaf or 4 tea bags in 750 ml (3 cups) of boiled water. Steep for 3-7 minutes (Steep time will depend on the type of tea. Most loose leaf teas provide directions on the packaging) After steeping place ice into a heat safe pitcher/container. If you plan to drink your iced tea immediately and you want your tea to be ice cold you will need 3 ice cube trays (6 cups) of ice. If you will not be drinking it within the hour, 2 trays (4 cups) of ice is all you need. Then strain the tea and pour directly onto the ice.

The cold steep method is an alternative if you have no ice.
To steep place 2 Tbsp of tea or 4 tea bags in 1.25 litres (5 cups) cold water overnight in the fridge.

Ice tea can also be made by placing your regularly steeped hot tea in the fridge for a few of hours.

Homemade Jewellery

Jewellery makes a great gift for all occasions. It makes an even greater gift when you can say, “I made it myself!” Graphic pendants are versatile; they can be made into necklaces, earrings, key chains or anything else you can think of. You can use any decorative paper as a design or you can design your own graphics. The possibilities for this gift are endless. Give them as a gift for Birthdays, Mother’s Day, Christmas or Valentine’s Day. Everyone will ask you how you made it.

This is how:

What you will need:

  • Glass tile (approx 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm or 1 inch x 1 inch)
  • 3D Glaze
  • Jewelry glue
  • Aanraku bail
  • String or chain with clasps if making a necklace
  • Decorative paper
  • Utility knife
We found it was a challenge to find the supplies for this project. To make it easier for you we have made kits with everything you need to make 5 pendants. It is available in our online store http://www.creativeplume.com/store/jewelry/pendant-kit/

How to Make Your Pendant:

Rinse the tile in room temperature water to remove any dust and allow to dry. Place your tile flat side up, and apply a coating of 3D glaze. Apply just enough to cover the flat side of the tile. Place an untrimmed piece of decorative paper, patterned side down on the glazed side of the tile. Work quickly because the 3D glaze dries fast.

Press paper firmly and evenly to the tile to remove bubbles. If glaze oozes out the edges just wipe it off. Flip over and make sure the image is the way you want it to look. Adjust it if needed. Allow the 3D glaze to dry for at least 30 minutes.

Use a sharp utility knife to carefully trim the excess paper from the edges of the tile. Scrape the edges carefully with the edge of the blade to remove any excess 3D glaze. Apply an even, bubble-free, coat of 3D Glaze to the paper side of the pendant.  Allow to dry for at least 30 minutes.

Attach an aanraku bail using the E-6000 adhesive and a toothpick. Apply a small amount of adhesive to the bail where the small reservoir is located. Then press the bail firmly to the 3D glazed paper side of the pendant. Center the bail and let dry about 12 hours.

Attach your pendant to a chain. You can also use your pendants to make earrings, wine charms, key rings, whatever you want. Have fun!

How To Make Special Occasion Crackers

Crackers are a great addition to any holiday dinner. Between the goofy hats, the corny jokes, and the “cracking”, these little gifts are guaranteed to get everyone in a festive spirit. We think that you can make crackers even more exciting by doing it yourself. By making your own crackers, you can guarantee that everyone will get a little trinket they will like. You can even make them specifically for each person and then use the crackers as place tags. Another benefit of making your crackers is that you can make them for any special celebration. You can make crackers for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Easter, Birthdays, Valentine’s Day, New Year’s or any other celebration

What You Will Need:

Tissue Paper
Wrapping Paper
Toilet Paper Rolls (2 for each cracker you want to make)
Cracker Snaps (Note: Due to new legislation you can no longer buy these individually at craft stores in Canada. There are two options to buy them now. You can buy a kit with the snaps included or you can find them through a second hand source online)
Jokes
Trinkets
Ribbon
Tape

How To Make Crackers For Any Special Occasion:

To make the crackers, first gather up all the things you need to put in the crackers. A traditional cracker has a snapper, a joke, a tissue paper hat, and a little toy inside. When you make your own you can put whatever you want inside. Use some Creative Plume and customize your crackers to the occasion and to what you think your guests will like.

Select the goodies for your crackers with your recipients in mind. You can choose the trinkets for specific guests, keep the recipients random or do the same thing for each person. We love these kits for these Geobursts. They are fun and simple to make, fun to play with and they can also be Christmas tree decorations. Perfect for all age groups. Here is the link to the instructions on how to make them on youtube.com. These instructions show you how to make the whole kit yourself. You can also buy the kits from Alejandro Erickson through his Geoburst store. To order the kits, contact him through this page and ask about the kits to make the Tensegrity Tensecoration Decorations.

Print and cut out some jokes. You can make you own or print out this ready made knock-knock joke template from nicholeheady.typepad.com.

You can buy pre-made tissue paper hats or you can make your own.

How To Make A Tissue Paper Hat:

One average sized tissue paper will make four hats. Fold the piece of tissue paper in half along the short edge (First Fold). Fold the same edge in half again (Second Fold). At this point, your tissue paper should have four layers and about the right height and length for a hat. Each layer will become an individual hat.

Next, fold it to make a tab for glue (Third Fold). Fold about an inch of the short edge down (Fourth Fold). Then fold the tissue paper in half along the long edge (Fifth Fold). Fold in half again along the same edge (Sixth Fold).

Fold in half once more along the same edge (Seventh Fold). Cut straight along one of the short edges of the tissue paper (First cut).

Cut the other short edge of the tissue paper at about a forty-five degree angle so that the folded edge is where the point is (Second Cut). After this cut, if you unfold your tissue paper once, there should be a ninety degree point at the top. At this point you can completely unfold the tissue paper and you should have four hats.

Next, glue the tab and attach to the opposite end of the tissue paper hat so it is a complete circle. Once the glue is dry, you have a completed hat. Fold it back up so it will fit into the cracker.

How To Make A Holiday Cracker:

Cut a piece of wrapping paper so it is three toilet paper rolls long and wide enough to wrap around one with about a half an inch excess. Cut a toilet paper roll in half. Put the snapper through the toilet paper roll. Put in a hat, a joke, a trinket any other items you want in your cracker.

Tape the wrapping paper to the toilet paper roll so it is in the centre of the paper. Tape the other edge of the paper to the roll so the toilet paper roll is covered. Insert the toilet paper roll halves into each end of the roll so they just line up with the edges of the paper.

Tie ribbon around the edges of each toilet paper roll in the space between the full roll and the half roll on each side. Curl the ribbon or tie it into a bow. Tape down the snapper to the inside of the cracker on each side.

Add any other decorations and or the recipients name and the cracker is complete. Enjoy celebrating with your friends and family!
